The Icelandic Material Collection
The Icelandic Material Collection consists of tangible materials that can be derived from animals, vegetation and minerals.
In Iceland, there has been limited material production using local raw materials. However, individuals who have developed processes to exploit specific raw materials possess extensive knowledge about the nature of those materials. It is as if the material itself becomes part of its creator’s self-portrait.
It is important to examine the potential of local raw materials. By doing so we will raise our awareness of where those materials come from and shed light on their diversity. This applies particularly to raw materials whose existence and value we have hitherto not considered.
The website for the Icelandic Material Collection is here.
This is an ongoing project.
